"Telling Stories": A Series of Paintings of the Elderly

What a thrill it was to receive these photos the other day. This is Reuben, one of the elderly I painted for my series "Telling Stories", stopping by with his family to see his portrait. I was so glad to see that he is smiling!

You can read about Reuben and his portrait here.

New 4-Week Drawing Class

I will be teaching a "Drawing the Human Figure" class for all levels at the Schoolhouse Art Center on Mondays, November 8-29 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

One of the most fascinating, and often the most frustrating, subjects to draw is the human figure. This 4-week class will teach students proportions of the face and body as well as the use of value tones and line, while encouraging individual style and expression.

Cost is $45 for members, $50 for nonmembers

A Few More Mixed Media Paintings from Figure Session

These two pieces are from our last figure session with a terrific model. She kept so still we weren't sure she was breathing. What was remarkable was that her expression remained so expressive, not the bored, zoned out look you often get after 10 minutes or so.

I started with a watercolor wash for both. The first image was done on illustration board so the highlights were easy to lift out. I followed with charcoal and Conte pencil.

The second image was done on 300# cold press, so there was no lifting of color. I added a darker wash into the background to bring out the figure.
