Painted with Words

Vincent Van Gogh is one of my favorite painters to read about. Not because of his persona as the mad genius. Yes, his tumultuous life, relationships and family are fascinating, but it was his insistence on expressing himself powerfully in a way that was not yet appreciated or understood that never ceases to amaze me.

These are his letters to Emile Bernard, a younger painter and friend who corresponded with Van Gogh for several years, up to Van Gogh's death in 1889. He writes about his inspirations, struggles, ambitions and influences. The book also contains sketches and notes for his paintings, as well as his new ideas about the study of color.
