The Reworking of American Tragedy

It's close. I can feel it. I've reworked this painting over the last couple of days and hit upon a composition that seems to work well. These layered paintings take me months to complete. I need to put them away for long periods of time and I've just figured out why. The paint is always doing interesting things on this slick surface and I find I often fall in love with a texture in the painting or an accidental color combination. When this happens it's harder for me to see the painting as a whole. When I put it away for a while I forget about the little areas and focus more on the entire painting and whether it is interesting or not.
