Back from the portrait conference and ready to paint! (I'll report on the conference after I sort through my photos and finish up this portrait.) During step 2 of the portrait, I was thinking about warm and cool colors. I started the skin tones and added a darker color to the shadow areas. The left and right sides of the shadow are warmer where they turn toward the light and the reflected light. The center of the shadow is cooler so I stuck to a cooler palette of alizarin crimson mixed with ultramarine blue and burnt umber. The warmer areas are painted with cadmium red, cadmium yellow and a little cobalt blue. The next step will be to define the structure of the face and ear using value.
